It was opening weekend for the Western Canadian Baseball League with the Moose Jaw Miller Express going 2-1 to start the season.

The Miller Express opened the season on the road against the Weyburn Beavers and picked up a 5-3 win.

Tied 3-3 after six innings of play, a Thomas Soto triple in the top of the seventh drove in Nathan Houston for the go-ahead run. Garrett Dennis scored off an error in the top of the ninth to seal the win for Moose Jaw.

Matt Vasquez picked up the win on the mound for the Miller Express with Takao Cookson picking up the save.

Moose Jaw returned for their home opener Saturday evening at Ross Wells Park and picked up a convincing 14-8 win over the Medicine Hat Mavericks. Moose Jaw wasted no time as they put up five runs in the bottom of the second. Medicine Hat replied with four runs of their own in the top of the third. However, the Miller Express scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the sixth to cruise to the win.

Jadon Canelli picked up the win for Moose Jaw on the mound.

The Miller Express rounded out their weekend with a 7-4 loss at Ross Wells Park on Sunday afternoon to the same Medicine Hat team. 

The game was knotted up 2-2 after the first inning. Medicine Hat scored two in the fourth and added three more in the seventh to go ahead 7-2. Moose Jaw tried to make a late comeback but ultimately fell short. Pitcher Declan O’Hare took the loss.

Moose Jaw is back in action on Wednesday and Thursday when they head to Brooks to face the Bombers. The Miller Express are back home on Friday to host the Fort McMurray Giants on Friday and Saturday. Game times are 7 p.m. They wrap up the weekend hosting the Weyburn Beavers at 2 p.m. at Ross Wells Park on Sunday.
