The wait is over. After a historic regular season, it’s time for playoff baseball in Moose Jaw.

The Moose Jaw Miller Express begin their quest for a Western Canadian Baseball League championship tonight when they host the Medicine Hat Mavericks in Game 1 of the East Division Semifinal at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the best-of-three series opening in front of the home crowd.

The Millers earned the East Division’s top seed after a remarkable 41-15 regular season, setting a new franchise record for victories. Offensively, Moose Jaw was one of the league’s most dangerous teams, batting .322 as a club, scoring 508 runs, collecting 607 hits, and stealing 150 bases.

Several Millers enter the playoffs swinging hot bats, led by:

  • Thomas Soto – .359 average, 80 hits, 75 runs scored and 49 stolen bases.
  • Chris Franks – .368 average, 60 RBIs and six home runs.
  • Eduardo Saenz – .361 average with 42 RBIs.
  • Garryn Plummer – .354 average with 47 RBIs.

Medicine Hat enters the postseason after claiming the fourth and final playoff spot in the East Division. The Mavericks feature plenty of offensive firepower of their own, led by Carter Roth (.359, 88 hits), Frankie Giacalone (14 home runs) and Jalen King, who finished the regular season batting .462 in limited action.

Despite the difference in regular-season records, the playoffs offer a fresh start, and the Mavericks arrive determined to pull off an upset after clinching their postseason berth on the final day of the regular season.

Head Coach Michael Gonzalez has kept his team’s focus on the bigger goal throughout the season, reminding his players that regular-season success means little once the playoffs begin.

Now it’s time for Moose Jaw fans to do their part.
